Take note that the macular degeneration study did not indicate that multivitamins may decrease the incidence of AMD, only the progression of AMD.

Specifically, on the effects of multivitamin use on Alzheimer’s disease, the research is split.

One study conducted in Utah observed a sample size of 4,740 participants from 1995 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 2000. The researchers found that for both people with Alzheimer’s and people who would later develop Alzheimer’s, multivitamin use was significantly lower than that of those who demonstrated healthy cognitive performance. Yet, a later study that attempted to replicate these findings observed no overall effect of multivitamin use on the cognition of men aged 65 years or older. (25) Another study observed a similar lack of effect among both men and women aged 65+. (26)
